Act NOW to meet May 18 deadline.

Program Overview

The Center for Health Research (CHR) has set aside funds for a number of small grants for Center members interested in pursuing health research that falls under one of the Center's three broad research priorities. Proposals from any UC Berkeley Center member with PI status will be accepted, although special consideration will be given to those from Center junior faculty members. The 2007-2008 grant proposal submission period is March 15–May 18, 2007.

Grant awards will be made for any amount up to $5,000 and are limited to one year. Their primary purpose is to support pilot or preliminary studies, with the expectation that they will lead to the submission—through CHR—of larger subsequent proposals to outside funding agencies. They are not intended to serve simply as vehicles for doctoral or post-doctoral research. Recipients are limited to two awards in a five-year period.

Proposed budgets may include support for GSRs, travel, pilot studies, data set purchases, summer salary support, and expendable research supplies (excluding equipment). Two grants were made for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Instructions are available or you may contact the Center for more information.

Research Priorities

While any proposal dealing with health issues may be submitted, preference will given to proposals that address one or more of the Center's research priorities:

  1. The social and behavioral determinants of health, health care-seeking behavior, and quality and outcomes of care.
  2. The impact of markets, organizations, and professions and the relationships among them as they influence issues of cost, access, quality, and outcomes of care.
  3. The causes and consequences of health care technological innovations, including biotechnology, genomic research, and e-health as these are translated into delivery of care and services to influence the health of individuals and communities.

Program Requirements

Recipients of funds must meet four requirements:

Proposal Instructions

The 2007-2008 grant proposal submission period is from March 15 to May 18, 2007. Please begin by reviewing the Center's research priorities. Interested applicants should then submit a completed grant proposal form, following the outline shown below. Completed proposal forms should be submitted by email attachment to CHR_UCB@berkeley.edu by Friday, May 18th, for consideration in this round of funding. Please feel free to contact the Center's Program Manager if you have questions about the Small Grant Program or its application process. Proposals that do not use the requisite proposal form will be returned for resubmission.

A review committee of CHR members and past Small Grant recipients will review all proposals and announce awards by June 1.
