The Center for Health Research is pleased to announce the 2005 Health Information Technology Grant Awards. Read about these exciting research projects and the faculty leading them here.
The Center for Health Research, together with CITRIS—the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, a multi-campus center headquartered on Berkeley's campus—and TEKES, the National Technology Center of Finland—hosted a one-day gathering this past December of Berkeley technology and social science researchers, and representatives from Finnish and U.S. technical enterprises, and Bay Area health care systems. Participants met in small groups to discuss possible joint research projects focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of wireless and embedded technologies in health care. More information about the conference, including speaker presentations, is available at the CITRIS website. It is hoped that TEKES will collaborate with the Center and CITRIS and the HIT Awardees, and that opportunities for future research with TEKES will be made available.
As a way to encourage continued collaboration in this area, the Center and CITRIS have joined together to offer four Health Information Technology (HIT) Grants. These grants, each for as much as $10,000, will be awarded to UC Berkeley faculty members (with PI status) from either the Center for Health Research or CITRIS for research in the area of wireless and embedded technology in health care. Special attention will be given to proposals from junior faculty.
Grant awards will be made for any amount up to $10,000 and are limited to one year (July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006). Their primary purpose is to support pilot or preliminary studies. There is an expectation that these small grants will lead to the submission of larger subsequent proposals to outside funding agencies. They are not intended to serve simply as vehicles for doctoral or post-doctoral research.
Proposed budgets may include support for GSRs, travel, pilot studies, data set purchases, summer salary support, and expendable research supplies (excluding equipment).
Applications for this year's awards are due April 25, 2005. Awards will be announced on May 23, 2005. Instructions are available or you may contact the Center for more information. Grant awards will be administered by the Center's grants administration staff per standard University protocols.

Grant proposals must comply with the program's research priority: The causes and consequences of health care technological innovations in e-health—with special emphasis on the evaluation of wireless and embedded technologies and their effects on processes and outcomes—as these innovations are translated into delivery of care and services to influence the health of individuals and communities.
Recipients of funds must also meet three requirements:
Recipients are also encouraged to present their work at a seminar hosted by one of the sponsoring centers.
Please begin by reviewing the program's research priority. Interested applicants should then complete the grant proposal form, which includes the outline shown below. Completed proposal forms (maximum length: three-pages, single-spaced) should be submitted by email attachment to CHR_UCB@berkeley.edu by April 25, 2005 for consideration in our next round of funding. Please feel free to contact the Center's Program Manager if you have questions about the HIT Grant Program or its application process. Proposals that do not use the requisite proposal form will be returned for resubmission.
A review committee of representatives from both centers, as well as external health care and technology providers, will review all proposals and announce awards by May 23, 2005.
